About the Company
paaause is an architectural and hospitality photography practice based in Ypsilanti, Michigan, working across Southeast Michigan and wherever a project takes us. We photograph hotels, restaurants, commercial interiors and new construction for architects, interior designers, developers and hospitality groups. We bring the same standard to residential listings, because a home for sale deserves to be seen the way it was designed. Every building sits where it does for a reason: the light it catches, the street it faces, the view it was turned toward. We learn those reasons before we shoot, and we build the pictures around them.
The name is the idea. Between before and after, there's a split second when everything comes together. The interior lights come up, the sky still holds its colour, and a room looks exactly like itself. That's the moment we work for, which is why we're so often on site at blue hour. We work with available light and put the camera where someone would actually stand or sit in the space. We also keep the result honest: nothing that changes what is there is hidden, and anything we add is disclosed. What we're after is a photograph worth stopping for.

About Laurent Kanago
Laurent Kanago founded paaause after sixteen years in architecture and sustainability. He studied architecture at the University of Illinois Chicago and went on to work as a sustainability consultant for architecture firms, general contractors and building developers around the Midwest. That work meant reading drawings, walking job sites and learning how buildings actually come together. It shapes how he photographs: he can see the decisions behind a space, and he knows which ones deserve to be seen.
His photography began around 2013 while he was travelling. At Monument Valley, facing the view everyone shoots from the same spot in the road, he set the camera on the ground instead. He has been looking for the other angle ever since. Years of bird and wildlife photography taught him to anticipate a moment and to choose where to stand. Architecture taught him why things are where they are. He grew up in Chicago and now lives and works in Ypsilanti.

Honest communication before the shoot, not after. If something isn't going to work for your budget or timeline, I'll tell you that upfront. If I need something from you to do the job right, I'll ask for it early.
